Hidden Sugar in Beverages: What We Talk About Less Often

“Hidden sugar” often refers to a lack of transparency in ingredients rather than sugar itself. It is also important to note that in bitter-style malt beverages, sugar is naturally derived from malted grains and enters the product along with vitamins and minerals, rather than being added as refined sugar.

Consumers should be aware of the source of sugar—whether it is natural, added, or derived from artificial sweeteners. The amount and type of sugar determine where a beverage fits within an individual’s lifestyle, and without awareness, making the right choice is not possible.

Even beverages with added sugar (such as certain malt drinks or fruit-based sodas) may contain less sugar than a standard soft drink. In reality, the core issue is not the presence of sugar itself, but the lack of clear information. Undoubtedly, consumer awareness is the key to making informed and appropriate choices.
